Portland, Maine’s historic Old Port is on the brink of transformation as Safdie Architects introduce a striking new district inspired by the region's iconic lighthouses. The centerpiece of this visionary project is a 380-foot-tall tower at 45 Union Street, cleverly designed to harmonize with the city's low-rise buildings while making a bold architectural statement. This isn’t just a single structure; it’s the beginning of a new urban narrative that will reshape how residents and visitors experience this bustling coastal area.
Creating a Vertical Neighborhood
Safdie Architects’ design brings together residences, hospitality, and retail spaces into a cohesive community centered around a shared vertical experience. The master plan encompasses four acres and is characterized by a unique layering of functions. The base level, with a porous and transparent design, features dual lobbies and a welcoming café, setting the tone for an inviting atmosphere. Above this lies nine floors of hotel spaces, followed by 14 stories of living spaces, culminating in a sky lobby and restaurant featuring breathtaking views of Casco Bay.
The Lighthouse Metaphor
