The recent expansion of the KLE Society Head Office in Belagavi, India, has truly been a marvel of architectural ingenuity. Known as the Hover Space, this extension by Thirdspace Architecture Studio has not only added a modern touch to the existing structure but has also paid homage to its historical roots, ensuring that both the integrity and significance of the original two-storey building remain intact.
The Challenge of Integration
Constructed over 50 years ago within a century-old educational campus, the original office was not just a functional workspace; it was a cherished institution. The architects faced a unique challenge: how to expand the building without disrupting its daily operations or overshadowing its historical context. To address this, they designed a floating structure, supported by eight sleek white columns, that preserves what lies beneath while providing ample new workspace.
Design Details That Matter
The newly added 1,000 sqm open-plan office space captures the essence of minimalist design while prioritizing functionality. The clever design incorporates two full-floor-height red trusses, creating a light-filled, airy environment that encourages productivity. Uniquely, the addition rises above the existing structure, likened to a gentle hover rather than a complete overhaul, symbolizing both care for the past and visions for the future.
Engaging with the Environment
The design goes beyond aesthetic appeal. Wrapped in a continuous verandah reminiscent of colonial architecture, the Hover Space serves as both a social gathering area and a climatic buffer. This transitional space shields the interiors from the harsh sun and rainy seasons, facilitating a connection with nature while maintaining comfort for its occupants.

The vertical circulation core in the new design connects the old and the new, framing a welcoming triple-height entry that aligns perfectly with the central tree-lined avenue of the campus.
