Discovering Malhar: A Symphony of Nature and Design
Set on a sprawling 6-acre farmland in Payyannur, Kannur, North Kerala, the Malhar Weekend Home stands as a harmonious blend of architecture, music, and nature. Designed by Deearth Architects, this residence echoes its namesake, the Malhar raga, which is deeply associated with the soothing sounds of rain. This unique home serves as both a weekend retreat for owners Anoop and Swapna and will eventually become their permanent residence, embodying their love for agriculture and music.
A Home that Embraces Nature
The site is a haven of lush greenery, rich in Arecanut trees and crisscrossed by a seasonal canal, making it essential for the design to maintain minimal disturbance to the natural landscape. The architects wisely decided to designate only a quarter of the land for development, allowing the majority to stay untouched, thereby enhancing the family’s connection with the environment.
Architectural Features that Inspire
With an open-plan layout, the house includes various family living spaces, a kitchen, and dedicated areas for music, inviting a connection that resonates with the outdoors. The design was influenced by the tropical wet climate, characterized by heavy monsoons and humid summers, leading to an architectural strategy focused on maximizing natural ventilation and cooling.
The prominent use of laterite stone—locally sourced and abundant—graces the home's structure, alongside Mangalore-pattern tiles that cover the sloping roof. These features ensure the house is not only visually striking but also suited to the variable climate of the region.
Engaging with the Elements
Key elements of the house, such as windows and overhangs, are specifically designed to capture natural light and breezes while reducing reliance on artificial cooling systems. The home's design also allows for a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing sensory experiences as residents navigate through different levels and the transition of materials.
The Emotional Connection of Space
Imagine stepping through the entrance foyer, which captures views of the surrounding landscape, providing a sensory experience that evokes wonder. As the eyes travel from the foyer through to an open courtyard, where an infinity pool awaits, the design fosters an intimate relationship with the environment and enhances the living experience.
Future Perspectives: A Sustainable Haven
As the owners anticipate transitioning into their forever home, the architectural vision aligns seamlessly with sustainable living. The inclusion of energy-efficient systems and innovative design solutions assures that Malhar Weekend Home will be a timeless shelter that stands resilient against the climatic conditions of Kerala, while embodying the owners' values and passions for music and the earth.
