This extraordinary cabin is brilliantly elevated ten feet above the ground, resting on six cast-in-place concrete columns. This design strategy not only responds to the seasonal flooding of the Wenatchee River but also provides a sheltered outdoor workspace underneath. As Wheeler’s vintage Bronco awaits repairs in the space below, the elevation creates an opportunity for a unique interaction with the environment. It's a smart use of space that the architect describes as being about paring life down to its essentials — a core philosophy throughout the entire project.
